My many interests

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

To those who know me, I am one of those people that always has some project happening.  I tend to cycle through projects at a phenomenal rate and they are all over the spectrum.  In this post I am going to put up some of my projects that I am either currently working on or have worked on.  This partially a list for me to help motivate me, and partially just something to put on this blog for content.  So without further ado:

CBViewer

CBViewer is a comic book archive file viewer that I wrote a while back.  There weren’t many viewers available at the time and the ones that were did not do what I wanted.  Mainly work on more than one OS and just let me view the pages and go backward and forward in the comic archives themselves.  In other words I wanted to have the feeling of reading a stack of comic books on my computer.  I have worked on CBViewer for a few years now and I actually have an updated partially rewritten version on my computer ready to upload to the world.  It is getting very close to version 1.0 and has had over 50,000 downloads on Sourceforge.net.  I need to put an update out since it has been a couple of years almost since my last one.  Sometimes life gets in the way and you need to deal with life first.

BNRT

BNRT is a network rendering tool I wrote for a project a few years back.  I needed a tool to speed up rendering with blender.  So I wrote a little client/server app that runs on each computer on the network and gets frames from the server to render a blender animation.  It works pretty decent.  Definitely buggy and should probably be tweaked some more.  I am probably going to rewrite this though and haven’t touched it in at least a couple of years.  I will get back to it at some point…

Microcontrollers

I love playing with PIC microcontrollers for stupid little projects.  I don’t think I have ever built anything remotely useful but I have a passion for the simple logic machines that they are.  I am looking at getting a couple of arduino boards to play with since I believe that they have a lot of potential and could be very fun.

Comic Books

I absolutely love comic books (see above for CBViewer).  I don’t have much money for them anymore since my divorce but I still manage to get some graphic novels now and then.  I am even working on my own comic that I have written a short script for and my girlfriend is working on the artwork.  Drawing is not one my talents.

CCGs

For those that don’t know what CCGs are, CCG stands for Collectible Card Game.  I have had an absolute passion for CCGs for years and since I don’t have a lot of money to throw at them I tend to buy ones wholesale that are usually out of print.  This may seem a bit odd, but the games are just as fun and I can get a lot more cards that way.  I recently found LackeyCCG which is a great way to play over the computer.  I have been playing the Unofficial Doctor Who CCG.  I highly recommend it to people to try out.

This post is getting longer than I intended it to, so I will wrap up for now.  I will write more later, hopefully.
